The European Free Trade Association (EFTA) offers the opportunity for a motivated and highly skilled professional to join the Secretary-General’s Office (SGO) in Brussels as Temporary Communications Coordinator. The EFTA Secretariat serves the four EFTA States – Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland – and has offices in Geneva, Brussels and Luxemburg.
SGO staff in Brussels manage EFTA’s communications activities and information and records management policies. SGO staff in Geneva support the Secretary-General as well as the activities and meetings of the EFTA Council. The communications team services the entire EFTA Secretariat, across its three duty stations, with publicising their work in the fields of EEA, trade and statistics.
This position is open to nationals of the EFTA and EU Member States.

Role Description
The Temporary Communications Coordinator in Brussels will support the Head of Communication and Information and the Digitalisation and Communications Manager in delivering the EFTA Secretariat’s communication and outreach activities. They will be part of a small team and will contribute to strategic discussions and the development of EFTA’s approach to communications. The position involves a lot of creativity and space to develop engaging content to deliver EFTA’s vision, mission and achievements to different stakeholders across different platforms and high profile events.
The Communications Coordinator will oversee the organisation’s social media channels and monthly newsletter, draft news items and support website management. They will provide critical support with event planning, including the two EEA Seminars held each year. The Coordinator is also in charge of delivering visitor group presentations, managing the EFTA news monitoring platform and online photo library, and contributing to key publications such as the EFTA Annual Report. The successful candidate should have strong writing and digital communication skills; experience with social media, photography and content creation, including videos and social media visuals; and a keen interest in international affairs.
Essential Skills
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public policy, international relations, European affairs, political science or equivalent
Experience
- Minimum two years of professional experience in communications, public relations or digital media
- Hands-on experience managing social media channels (LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube), including content planning and analysis of engagement metrics
- Experience in drafting and editing online content, such as news articles, newsletters, website updates and social media posts
- Proficiency in content creation, including graphic design, photography and video editing for digital platforms in tools such as Canva
- Familiarity with website management
- Experience with photography in professional settings, including taking and editing photos of meetings, events and key moments for digital publication
- Experience in event coordination, including logistics, communications and promotional materials an asset
- Previous experience in managing administrative tasks
Skills
- Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to produce clear, engaging and professional content for different audiences and channels
- Strong digital communication skills, including in social media management and content creation
- Proficiency in graphic design and visual content creation using tools such as Canva or similar software
- Photography skills, including the ability to capture and edit high-quality images
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritise work effectively in a fast-paced, international environment
- Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate with colleagues across different divisions and duty stations
- Proactive approach to problem-solving in both communications and administrative tasks
- Fluency in English (written and spoken) is essential, knowledge of an additional EFTA/EU language is an advantage
Ideal Skills
- Basic video filming and editing multimedia content for digital use
- Good understanding of website content management systems
- Event coordination skills, including logistical planning, communication and promotional support
- Basic knowledge of media monitoring and analytics tools, with the ability to track and report on communication activities
- Familiarity with EU institutions, trade relations or international affairs
Employment Terms
Grade: B3
Annual salary: EUR 49 443
